Number of young people not in work or education hits 11-year high
The latest ONS statistics reveal a deeply concerning reality: nearly 1 million young people aged 16 to 24 in the UK are not in education, employment, or training (NEET). In Devon, this issue is particularly acute, with rural isolation, lack of accessible opportunities, and socioeconomic challenges exacerbating the crisis.
The ramifications of being NEET are profound—not just for these young people but for society as a whole. Disengagement leads to higher risks of social exclusion, mental health struggles, and long-term unemployment, creating a cycle that is increasingly difficult to break.
At Life Chance Trust, we are committed to transforming the life chances of 16 to 25-year-olds who have faced trauma and adversity. We do this through:
🔹 One-to-One Mentoring – Personalised support to help young people set and achieve their goals.
🔹 Life Skills Workshops – Equipping youth with essential skills for independence and success.
🔹 Youth Participation – Ensuring young voices shape the services designed for them.
But we can’t do this alone. Addressing the NEET crisis must be a collaborative effort—with schools, charities, local authorities, and businesses working together to better support the most vulnerable young people in our communities.
A shift in mindset is needed. So is urgent funding. With the right investment and commitment, we can change the trajectory for young people in Devon and beyond.
