Background
M left a specialist provision at 16 and had trouble with education ever since. After trying 2 post 16 provisions, 1 had broken down, which meant number 2 was unsuccessful.

Diagnosed with Aspergers, and suspected ADHD, M found it difficult to interact with others. M recently transitioned from male to female which made going out even harder. Parents were really supportive but did not know what else they could do to support their daughter.

Mentoring
Chloe and M’s first session really saw a difference in M straight away. She was happy to be out of the house without her parents. She was keen to go different places each week and try new things. Some sessions were tricky, but Chloe was determined to keep supporting M to help her engage with the community. It was important for Chloe to support M feel part of a community group and that when they found Proud 2 Be. Proud 2 Be is a local LGBTQ+ group who provide 121 mentoring as well as have regular gatherings for M’s age group. Together they referred M for 121 mentoring and went to see a couple of the support workers at their office. M was invited to their Friday evening group for 18-30 year olds and she took the leap and attended on her own. She couldn’t wait to tell Chloe about it at their next session. Chloe and M also visited Simply Great Education which is an SEN provision aimed at young people with a passion for computers, technology, gaming and digital creativity.

M finds it very difficult to trust people as she’s been let down so many times by professionals. M has many complex issues which Chloe has a good understanding of as she takes the time to listen to M. M really likes Chloe and has a good rapport with her and has looked forward to her time with her. All the previous young workers/enablers M has has, she has quite quickly dropped as she felt, as did we, that they didn’t get her or wanted to get her.

Chloe was just the thing we needed. We found Chloe very empathic but also very professional. We would love Chloe to work with M again as would M!”

Where are they now?
Chloe and Proud 2 Be worked together to transition M from our mentoring programme to theirs. Proud 2 Be work with young people to help them with their identity and help to meet other young people in their community.

We also worked with CSW group, who would support M with education and would work with the family to apply for Simply Great Education. Chloe was there to support M and her family to bridge those gaps and ensure they had the right people in place to work with M.
