K – CASE STUDY
K CASE STUDY
16 year old boy. Sporty, full of energy and curious.
MENTORED
BY ALEX
Background
K had been out of education for 3 years. The previous setting was a specialist provision for young people who had a background of adverse childhood experiences. He found himself involved with criminal activity and being influenced by others. Also being diagnosed with ADHD, K was stuck with what to do next. Mum was finding it difficult to “keep him out of trouble”.
Mentoring
After the first session, it was apparent to Alex that their sessions will always have to involve actively doing things or going for drives. Alex and K spent time visiting construction stores and volunteering for T.H.A.T food bank. They would help with deliveries to homes that needed food. They also spent time on Haldon cycling.
Alex supported K to transition to Eat That Frog through the summer holidays. When Eat That Frog was first suggested to K, he refused and said after visiting it, he did not like it. However, with the support of Alex, he agreed to try. The summer had finished, and having attended his transition visits, he was ready to start.
“He came home from meeting Alex a different child. He really bonded with Alex, and he is always so excited to see him.
When he was distressed at home once, all he wanted to do was speak to Alex. He really made a difference”.
Angela – Mum
Where are they now?
After successfully starting Eat That Frog, K will get the earlier bus, rather than the one that arrives the time he starts, so that he is early. K is really enjoying being back in a provision and is spending less time in the community at home.
K enjoyed the volunteering he did with Alex so is currently looking to find some more.
His new ability to be independent to get himself to college has meant his confidence has grown.
